Each month, The Calhoun School honors teachers and support staff who are making a difference at their school. In December, Brittany Hardmon was named Teacher of the Month. Hardmon is new to Calhoun, but not new to teaching and instructs 11th and 12th grade English.
“She’s new to our staff this year but she is not new to teaching,” said The Calhoun School Principal Nicholas Townsend. “She does an awesome job with her lesson planning and teaching her lessons in the classroom. She takes a special interest in the students.”
In addition to classroom instruction, Hardman also acts as the varsity girls’ volleyball coach and the assistant coach for the varsity girls’ basketball team.
“Anyone who teaches a class and juggles coaching has a difficult task, but she’s able to balance it all and give each [role] 110%,” Townsend said.
Calhoun’s head custodian Jerome Safford was named as Support Staff Member of the Month in December. According to Townsend, Safford is instrumental in keeping the school’s campus clean and well maintained.
“We always receive compliments when people visit the campus on how clean the grounds are,” Townsend said. “He’s a big part of that. He’s one of my go-to guys.”
Townsend explained that the campus is undergoing repairs to the heating and cooling system and construction on the newly renovated gymnasium. When workers need access to the building after hours, Safford is always ready to assist.
“He doesn’t mind coming up, unlocking the gate and building, then coming back to lock up,” Townsend said. “If we have alarms to go off, he’s willing to go back to school and shut them down. He’s also doing what we ask him to do throughout the day, a lot of little things like keeping light bulbs changed out.”
