Kayla Burke-Greenwood, RN-BSN, a native of Lowndes County who grew up in the Trickum Community, has made history by becoming the first county-employed nurse at the John Hulette Detention Center in Hayneville. Prior to her current role, Greenwood provided medical services to inmates through an agency.

“I’m glad to be able to work within the county where I was raised,” Greenwood said. “It’s truly a blessing to give back to my community and be able to serve the inmates, ensuring their medical needs are met.”

After graduating high school in 2001, Greenwood pursued her certifications as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) at Wallace Community College Selma. She then earned an Associate of Applied Science in Nursing at Lurleen B. Wallace Community College before graduating with honors from South University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Currently, Greenwood is furthering her education by working towards a master’s degree in nursing at South University.

 

Lowndes County Sheriff Chris West emphasized the significant benefit of having a staff nurse. He highlighted that Greenwood’s employment by the county extends her services to all county government entities, including the County Commission, the highway department, and courthouse staff.

“We didn’t have a nurse,” West explained. “We had a company that we contracted with, but it wasn’t really providing everything that we needed. We reached out to our local Health Services and were able to enter into a contract with them for our medical services. Kayla is our liaison with them, so it brings everything full circle.”

Greenwood’s role as the first county-employed nurse marks a positive step in ensuring comprehensive medical care for inmates at the John Hulette Detention Center. Her commitment to her community and dedication to her profession is exemplified in her role, where she continues to serve with compassion and expertise.
