Lowndes County election results are in and with only 2,585 voters (26.84%) showing up at the polls, one county commissioner awaits an April runoff to learn if he will be re-elected.

In a tight race for Lowndes County Commissioner representing District 3, Democrats Fletcher Hayes and incumbent Joshua Simmons tied, each receiving 41% of the votes. 

Simmons and Hayes both received 229 votes (41.19%) in the Democratic primary. Another challenger, Donald Carter, Jr. received 98 (17.63%) of the votes.

Simmons and Hayes will face off in the April 16 runoff election.

Dickson Farrior gained 416 votes (69.57%) to win re-election as Lowndes County Commissioner in District 5 against challengers Terrell Means and Roderick Thornton in the Democratic primary. Means received 177 votes (29.60%) and Thornton gained 5 votes (0.84%).

Farrier expressed his gratitude for the support of District 5 constituents.

“The people have been really good to me,” Farrior said. “This is the 11th time they have reelected me and I am going to try to serve them and do the right thing. I hope I have produced for them over the years and will continue to do that.”

For U.S. House District 7, Terri Sewell won with 93% of the vote, defeating Christopher Davis. 

“To every voter who supported our campaign, I say thank you. It is because of your support that I can officially announce that I am the Democratic nominee for Alabama’s 7th Congressional District,” Sewell said. “While we celebrate our victory tonight, we know that our fight is not over. There is too much at stake for us to be on the sidelines. We have to keep working to lower costs and grow our economy. We have to keep working to make healthcare more affordable. We have to keep working to make our communities safer. And we have to protect our democracy and our sacred right to vote from those who seek to take us back.

“I look forward to us working together as we march toward November and victory. Thank you again for your support. It is an honor to represent you in Congress, and I look forward to the work that lies ahead.”

The Alabama Republican Party announced in a statement Wednesday that Horn officially withdrew from the Republican Primary for the District 7 seat. At the time of his withdrawal, it was too late to remove his name from the ballot, but he was allowed to drop out of the race.

The runner-up Republican candidate from the Primary will move forward as the Party’s nominee.

Republican Sarah Stewart gained an overwhelming victory for Alabama’s Supreme Court Chief Justice and moved unchallenged to the November election. 

Republican Chad Hanson earned 56% of the votes for Judge of the Civil Appeals Court, Place 2. Rich Anderson prevailed in the race for Judge of the Criminal Appeals Judge, Place 2.

Republican Twinkle Cavanagh won with 61% of the votes to move unchallenged as the candidate for Public Service Commission President.

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump emerged victorious as winners in the Super Tuesday primaries and will move to the general election in November. The race was called with Biden gaining 40 out of 52 primary delegates and Trump winning 41 out of 50. 

Voters in Lowndes County cast 1,531 votes (87.29%) for Biden in the Democratic Primary and 579 votes (93.54%) for Trump in the Republican race.

Voters failed to pass Statewide Amendment 1, 51-49%. If passed, the bill would have removed a step from the Legislature’s process for passing local bills which affect only one city or county.
