Memorial Day is a federal holiday in America, observed each year on the last Monday in May. The day is set aside to honor and mourn military personnel who died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.

As the name implies, Memorial Day is a time for remembering, and so, begs the question, “Who did you remember on Monday?”

Many people know an individual who serves or served in the armed forces and who served in combat during a war or conflict. Fewer remember someone who gave their life protecting the freedoms we enjoy today.

For this reason, community observances are important.

And, in Lowndes County, Life Restaurant honored military personnel by offering them a 10% discount on lunch meals.

Other organizations and individuals in Butler, Lowndes and Crenshaw County observed the holiday in different ways.

Some pastors, like Clay Crum at First Baptist Church in Luverne, honored heroes by naming them during Sunday morning church services. Many individuals also took to social media posts to honor the ones they remembered.

The Greenville Lions Club annual Memorial Day event is one example of the importance of honoring heroes. By naming and celebrating military personnel who died while serving, we keep their legacy of selfless service alive and inspire younger generations to choose acts of service themselves when called upon to do so.

However you chose to observe the day, we hope you remembered the sacrifice military personnel and their families offer to keep America free. We encourage you to thank them for their service, while you also remember the many who died while serving to preserve the freedoms we enjoy.
