On Saturday, Aug. 10, the Episcopal Church in Alabama held the 27th Jonathan Daniels and the Martyrs of Alabama Pilgrimage, marking 59 years since Daniels was slain in Hayneville.

The Rt. Rev. Dr. Dorothy Sanders Wells, XI Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Mississippi, addressed crowds who gathered in the Courthouse Square for prayer and singing before pilgrims processed along the route marking the steps of Daniels and others martyred for boycotting white-only businesses in Fort Deposit.

Prior to the pilgrimage, Lowndes County Public School principals hosted the Episcopal Youth Breakfast in the Hayneville Middle School cafeteria for students in grades 9 – 12.
