An Editorial Opinion of The Lowndes Signal
Calico Fort, home of a renowned annual arts and crafts fair, prepares for Fall at the Fort: A Holiday Festival. Slated for Nov. 2, the event offers much of what the April fair delivers — arts, crafts, gifts, food, a children’s area and entertainment — plus a barbeque cookoff, car show and more.
The family-friendly event is just one of several in the tri-county area that draws people from south-central Alabama and surrounding areas to taste a sampling of what Lowndes County has to offer.
Residents enjoy festivals, held outdoors where children can run off their energy playing and perhaps feeding farm animals at a petting zoo while sampling any number of sweet or savory, sticky treats. Some adults can partake in a bit of shopping while others pull up a chair in the shade to visit with neighbors they have not seen recently.
Over the weekend, Camellia City Fest welcomed tourists and locals to Greenville’s historic downtown area where despite forecasted rain, patrons enjoyed shopping, tasty treats and fun young and old alike.
But while visitors were surely made welcome at Greenville’s 10th annual festival, locals were made to feel right at home too as they took advantage of the opportunity to taste the wares of food trucks on hand and enjoy visiting with neighbors and friends during the festive event.
On October 26, the City of Luverne will host its third annual Friendliest City Festival. Performers, vendors and volunteers are preparing for the event where politicians, church groups and artisans will have tables where they can talk with patrons. The all-day event is held at Douglass Park and boasts something for all ages to enjoy.
With all three events situated within a short drive from each other, Butler, Lowndes and Crenshaw County residents can enjoy each without needing to pack an overnight bag. We appreciate that organizers put forth their best efforts for the community and encourage local residents to take advantage of what each event has to offer.
