The Lowndes County Children’s Policy Council (CPC) recognized a Fort Deposit Elementary School student recently, naming her as its October Character in Action (CIA) award recipient.
Candace Crawford, who was nominated for the award because she embodies her school’s “we shine” motto, received the award from Lowndes County District Judge Adrian Johnson in front of school and school board representatives alongside her family in a ceremony held Oct. 30. At the school, where “every day is an opportunity to shine,” administrators describe Crawford as a leader who displays compassion and integrity among her peers.
“Candace took initiative in holding herself and her peers accountable in completing daily tasks,” administrators wrote in the nomination. “She leads by example without a doubt. She is a well-rounded young lady.”
According to Johnson, the council developed the CIA program to encourage students who exhibit good character. As District Judge, Johnson presides over juvenile court cases and said the courts encounter their fair share of children needing help to correct bad behaviors. Awarding children who meet and exceed behavioral standards is just one way to encourage others to do the same.
Crawford is seen as a role model and was nominated because school faculty members say they “cannot think of anyone more deserving of this recognition.” She has shown consistent peer support through her willingness to show kindness by volunteering to help log students with their lessons.
Nominators said Crawford upholds characteristics of honesty and respect with a strong moral compass.
“She handles challenges with grace and never hesitates to do the right thing even when its difficult,” they said.
As the October CIA award recipient, Crawford received a certificate, a CIA t-shirt and a $100 Walmart gift card supplied by the council. Johnson said the CPC awards one student each month during the school year, choosing from among nominees submitted by Lowndes County Public Schools.
