Heading into the Thanksgiving break, Lowndes Academy Public Schools’ basketball teams competed with area teams to bring home a few wins.
The Calhoun School Tigers vs. the Keith Bears
The Tigers traveled to Dallas County on Nov. 19 to take on the Keith Bears. A 64-60 win for the varsity Tigers claimed the teams’ first win of the season.
The Calhoun School varsity basketball coach Jakeem Davison expressed his pride in the team for their performance.
“On Tuesday night we got our first win of the season against a very scrappy Keith Bears team in a hostile environment.” Davison said. “Our team showed great maturity and resilience throughout the contest.’
Davison said coming off the victory, the Tigers have work to do before resuming play in December.
“We played great defensively but the offense got stagnant at times,’ Davison said. “Our standout players were Tyler Robertson [who had] 26 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks, and Duke Thigpen [who had] 16 points, 20 rebounds and three blocks.”
The Lady Tigers fell to the Lady Bears, 54-22. Calhoun’s JV team also sustained a 24-22 loss.
The Calhoun Lady Tigers vs. Pike County
The Calhoun School Lady Tigers scooped up a 30-29 win over Pike County High School on Nov. 21 in a Pre-Thanksgiving Shootout hosted by Luverne School.
The Calhoun School girls’ coach Kenyotta Smith said the win came from the team’s cohesive efforts.
“We got off to a slow start in the first half, but the girls were able to come together as a team and get some stops on the defensive end,” Smith said. “We improved on our turnovers from our first two games. We got some great effort from our newcomers. Hustle and teamwork helped us get the win.”
Central High School vs. Bullock and Wilcox Counties
The Central High School varsity Lions clutched a 61-60 win over the Bullock County Hornets.
Sophomore Amari Surles grabbed the win for the Lions, making a free-throw with two seconds left on the clock.
“He won the game for us,” said head coach Brian Coleman. “He got fouled on a fast-break layup.”
Junior Christian Lawrence made 22 points and five rebounds. Senior Iyanis Wallace had 15 points and four rebounds, while Jvyion Gordon had 13 points and four rebounds.
Next up for the Lions is a Dec. 5 trip south to meet Luverne. Calhoun heads west to Selma on Dec. 5 to take on Southside.
