The Lowndes County basketball scene is in full swing already for the 2024 season as the Calhoun Tigers are 1-and-1 and the Central Hayneville Lions stand 2-and-2.
Let’s look at Calhoun. The Tigers under coach Jakeem Davison had a 64-60 victory over the Keith Bears and lost to the RC Hatch Tigers 86 to 81. They will play in 2A Area 5 and their area foes are JU Blacksher, 1-and-1, Central Hayneville and Highland Home who have yet to tip off their 2024 round ball season.
The Central Lions, under Coach Brian Coleman, have wins over Luverne, 61 to 60 and Bullock County 61 to 60. They have lost twice to Wilcox Central 80-63 and 84-66. The Lions’ next game will be Thursday on the road as they face the Luverne Tigers in a 2A Area 5 match up. Meanwhile, Calhoun will travel to Southside of Selma to take on the Panthers Thursday.
After ending football season in the AISA state championship football playoffs, and taking home the runners-up title, the Lowndes Academy Rebels tip off their basketball season against Hooper Academy in a tournament against Macon East Eagles December 5 and 6. Game time is set for 3 p.m. on Dec. 5 and at 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 6. The Eagles have already started their season with two losses. The rebels under coach and headmaster Barry Mohun will face Hooper Academy on Jan. 7, followed by a game with Valiant Cross on Jan. 10.
