Lowndes Academy announced Monday the return of alumnus and former Rebels’ baseball standout David Hussey as a teacher and baseball coach.
According to Mohun, Hussey comes onboard the staff full time starting in January, teaching physical education and serving as head coach of baseball and assistant coach in football.
“He is an outstanding individual,” Mohun said. “I think he will be a really good role model for our students and student-athletes. His baseball background is really impressive, having played on some different levels in college.
“The bottom line is he’s a Lowndes person. He’s a Lowndes graduate, so it’s a win-win for everybody.”
Hussey graduated from Lowndes Academy in 2016 and played community-college baseball for a year at Georgia Highlands Community College for a year. He transferred from there to a Division One school, the University of Tennessee at Martin, where he played college baseball for the next four years — three traditional and an extra year of eligibility due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
“In the sports world, baseball is what I wanted to do,” Hussey said. “I played all the sports at Lowndes, but baseball was always what I knew I wanted to do.”
Hussey began his baseball career in the seventh grade, joining the Rebels’ team as early as he became eligible, as a seventh grader playing varsity ball and eventually playing under former coach Shane Moye. He earned his undergraduate degree in 2020 and a Master of Business Administration in 2021.
“I’ve always had a drive, and coaching has always been in the back of my mind,” Hussey said. I just felt like, if the time was right, then it would work out. That’s kind of what happened when Coach Matt [Marshall] called me. I felt like this is where the Lord has been leading me to be. I’m so happy and blessed to be able to do it now.”
The new coach understands Lowndes Academy’s winning culture and has plans to continue to build on the team’s successes.
“It’s important to me we continue the winning culture,” Hussey said. “I was fortunate to be able to play for Coach Shane from the first year he was at Lowndes. I was able to learn that from him and have every intention of going for a ‘three-peat’ this year.
“But I think the biggest thing is the impact I want to have on these young men’s lives. That was something that I’ve had — coaches who really impacted my life. You know, it’s becoming a better man, not just a better baseball player. I believe in doing things the right way, and I think winning comes with doing everything the right way and trying to raise these young men the best we can. I think that winning will come as a part of that.”
