There is danger everywhere! Have you ever thought that nearly every time we get on the road, if we meet another vehicle, we are a few feet or less from death. If one of us veers just a little bit, it could bring about death for either or both of us.
And we are hurtling past one another, if we are doing the speed limit, at a combined 110 miles per hour (MPH). It is scary to think about. We can be doing something very simple and ordinary, like walking or even standing, and danger can come our way.
When you add the actions of wicked people, such as the event in New Orleans, it becomes even more necessary to watch out. One of those killed was a Montgomery native, who graduated from Alabama Christian Academy and Auburn University. His life was cut short by the evil intentions of an evil man.
But there are dangers that surround us that do not necessarily involve our physical lives. Listen to the Apostle Peter, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8). All around us, on TV, in movies, in music, on social media, are the forces that are trying to get us to leave God behind and to dedicate our lives to what will destroy our souls.
How do we overcome this? According to Peter, by resisting Satan; by being steadfast in the faith; by trusting God to perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle us. by giving God the glory and by being aware so we are not led to the error of the wicked (2 Peter 3:17).
If we will “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18), then as evil attacks and tries to take us captive, we can hide, together, in the safety of the shadow of the cross.
